Most of you know that Doug started his new career back in January but I haven't blogged about it, so here goes. Back in AZ, we were feeling stuck at his old job as though he'd gone as far as he could with that company. He'd been there for over 7 years and we were ready for a change that would use his new MBA more fully. We also felt guided to leave the desert and introduce our children to the mountains, seasons and a new home. Every time we came to visit Utah, it just felt right, so we made goal to get there one year from our last visit. July 1st. We worked hard all year, and did just that. We moved and got here July 1st with hopes of finding work soon and doing whatever we were guided here to do.
Unfortunately the job market was slow and the money we saved up to live on for a while ran out. We were unemployed for about 6 months. This resulted in a few things we never expected. The first being accepting the generosity of family and friends. Some offered help at Christmas, others sent cash when they could, I learned about the welfare program of my church and was a regular visitor of the Bishop's Storehouse where food is available. I never knew what it was before, but would love to contribute to that effort from now on. Doug took on some seasonal work and both he and I learned at a deeper level than we ever had the meaning of prayer and patience.
So, finally in January, Doug was offered a job with a company that is so, so wonderful. He is a Business Process Analyst. The people there are awesome. The environment is uplifting and professional. The pay is much better for our growing family. The insurance is the best part. He is using his degree and there will probably be room to grow and rise "the ladder." He no longer commutes an hour each way but works just down the road at the foot of two beautiful mountains. The kids can't get over the fact that there is a kitchen stocked with candy, fruit, soda, juice or whatever for FREE! He also gets to travel a bit and has already taken his first business trip with plans for two more very soon.
Watching him the last few months, it has taken a toll on him. He has felt the load of responsibility with four kids, a pregnant wife and the emotions that go along with not being able to support them, though willing to do anything in his power. I've actually never seen him more humble, more patient and more "receptive" to the spirit. Comparing his happiness from his old job, to the unemployment phase to his new wonderful job is a testimony to me to follow where you are guided. We like to list out what we call, "unexpected blessings" that we received during this hard time.
We have lots of new changes coming up still...baby, finding a house, etc. But the past few months getting our feet back under us has been amazing. Thanks to all who helped and still help our family! We really, really appreciate it.
Below are some pictures of our job celebration meal. When there's a big event, you can bet we are either celebrating with BBQ, Olive Garden or way too much Chinese takeout.
