Supportive Friends

On a foggy day in January, I took a picture and then walked the kids to school to make sure they got there safe.  We couldn't even see out of our cul de sac.  I told the kids driving in fog is even more dangerous than driving in snow.  We heard sirens and commented how strange fog was because sound carries in all direction and we couldn't tell where the sirens were coming from or how far away.

Later we learned that Carter's best friend's father a few streets away had been driving to work and was hit by a semi-truck and killed.  The week was very sad and Carter had a lot of questions.  The family has five young children.  The day of the funeral, Carter stayed home from school and he and I went to the funeral.  Apparently everyone else had the same idea because all of Carter's close friends (about 7 of them) were there in their suits with their moms to support their friend. Many members of the school administration and teachers were there as well.  We followed to the gravesite and took along a few boys.  It was very hard to watch, but I was proud of the boys.  It's not often you see a sixth grade buddy weeping.  They were reverent and respectful.  I took them out to lunch afterward.
