My grandmother says the best investment you can have in your home is to plant fruit trees which payback ten fold over the years. She's had hers for over 40 years so we trusted her.
Here's the low-down on planting bare root fruit trees.
1. Keep the roots moist and wet till they are in the ground.
2. Dig holes deep enough for roots to spread
3. Place in, cover up, add fertilizer and root solution
4. Water vigorously for many days
5. Prune apple trees in modified central leader or central leader format, peach trees in open vase method. (It's complicated so look it up if you are curious). It's quite painful to plant the tree and then chop it up in pruning to practically nothing. It's supposed to help it in 3-5 years though. We'll see.
Still working on clearing the garden area. It was very hard work.
The side view of the house from the garden.
Peach tree before pruning.
Miles took some shots of my hard work holding up the trees.
Miles fell in the hole when he wasn't looking
Carter was home sick for a while with pneumonia and helped me paint the rocks with paint markers so the kids would know what the trees were.
Ta da!

We're working on finally putting in a veggie garden. I hadn't even thought of fruit trees. Genius. Not sure if we have enough yard space now but one day I hope.
I love the rocks! You could have a fruit stand (:
