We're Allergic

The weekend of General Conference, I put a little trail mix that Carter had gotten as a soccer game treat out in a bowl to munch on.  Doug and I were upstairs when suddenly Max came in with red blotches all over his face crying.  The red hives quickly spread all over his body and we gave him a dose of benedryll.  A few more minutes passed by and he started to not be able to breath.  Carter and Doug loaded him in the car quickly and drove to the nearest urgent care, then another, then another.

Nothing was open on Sunday.  They called me and I told them to come home and I'd call 911.  By then, Max had started throwing up all over the car and Carter.  We hung up and I called the ambulance to come to our house.  Doug showed up one minute later and brought in Max who was turning blue by then and mostly unconscious.  Doug was shouting at him to stay awake.

Carter took the kids upstairs to get out of the way of the emergency workers who just showed up.  They raced Doug and the baby away and I followed in the van to the nearest hospital.  I called a neighbor to come help the kids who were scared.  By the time I got to the hospital, I honestly didn't know what to expect and I prayed that he would just be alive.  He was hooked up to lots of things and an IV had been started.  You can't tell from the pictures but he was completely red with hives, but awake and breathing.

When the medicines started working, he got wiggly and I held him for hours until he fell asleep. I remember his little breath on my neck felt so good.  After a few hours of medicine and rest at the hospital, we got sent home.  The next day Doug had an interview early so we took some pictures of Max and the kids and texted to him.  The kids loved on him knowing that he could have easily died the day before.  Carter was a true hero too staying calm in an emergency.

The hives came and went for about two weeks and we now how two epi-pens.  He still needs to get to an allergist to determine whether it was the peanuts, cashews, or almonds in the trail mix that set off the reaction.  We had no idea that he was allergic to anything.  We went through all the house, throwing out any food or candy labeled with nuts and are still learning what products were made with tree nuts (and it's a lot!)

The next day...
